Book Club: The Beauty Myth by Naomi Wolf

Crushed is kicking off our very first unofficial ‘book club’ – it’s what I’m reading at the moment and wanted to share this important book by feminist author Naomi Wolf titled The Beauty Myth. We'll keep sharing things we love to read and hopefully we can get together soon to discuss!

About the book:

Every day, women around the world are confronted with a dilemma - how to look.

In a society embroiled in a cult of female beauty and youthfulness, pressure on women to conform physically is constant and all-pervading. In this iconic, gripping and frank exposé, Naomi Wolf exposes the tyranny of the beauty myth through the ages and its oppressive function today, in the home and at work, in literature and the media, in relationships between men and women, between women and women. With pertinent and intelligent examples, she confronts the beauty industry and its advertising and uncovers the reasons why women are consumed by this destructive obsession.

A bit about the author:

Naomi Rebekah Wolf is an American feminist author & journalist. Following her first book The Beauty Myth which was released in 1991, she became a leading spokeswoman for what has been described as the third wave of the feminist movement.

Why we’re crushing on Naomi Wolf and her first book:

Whilst we stand firmly in our beliefs that inclusivity in the feminist movement is absolutely the way forward & that the wonderful men in our lives deserve to be celebrated as often as we are, we also believe that we should always strive for awareness. This book is an essential classic in modern feminist literature, shedding light on a systemic problem that affects all of us in different ways.
