BRUT ROSÉ MÉTHODE CAP CLASSIQUE
She vowed to never use anything but traditional Champagne grapes (usually Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier) but the Shiraz on her farm was just too good to let go – and it has made Melissa Nelson’s first rosé bubble an absolute stunner!

JURASSIQUE
It really does tick all the boxes – refreshing as you like but with an otherworldly substance that makes it perfect to pair with any festive feast.

BARDOLINO
We’ve said it before and we will say it again, we live for an underdog! Bardolino is often compared to Beaujolais, which, as far as the French are concerned, does not always carry the same sex appeal as its neighbour Burgundy (Bardolino is right next to Valpolicella, so it can relate). Yet Beaujolais and Bardolino share some of the most wonderful “quaffing” characteristics. Sadly, some of the best examples are often wildly underappreciated. We’re here to tell you that we’re championing this wine. All. Day. Long.

ABOUT THE VINEYARD PARTY

Jolette Steyn is a super international wine sales lady by day, planning Vineyard Parties on the side. She has 15 harvests under her belt and quit her winemaking day job to take a gamble on making the kinds of wine she, as a self-proclaimed wine geek, truly loves. The Vineyard Party aims to bring some of South Africa’s lesser-known varietals to the forefront by exploring the Cape’s vineyards in search of biodiverse, sustainably farmed vineyards with happy soils, people and vines. This is the maiden release and quantities are super limited!

The two wines, I’m Your Huckleberry (or Huck, as we like to call it) and Here be Dragons are harvested from the same vineyard on the same day. Split into 3 batches and fermented in different, avant-garde and low intervention ways. Each one includes 2 different components of the 3 techniques.

OUR FAVE THING ABOUT THIS WINE
The reference? Val Kilmer in Tombstone. (No, we haven’t seen it either - Jamie). The tale of an underrated, underappreciated grape rising to the occasion, accepting the challenge, saying with confidence that “I’m the one you’re looking for”.

“A dope-smoking political anarchist meets an upstanding young goody-goody sportsman at a mutual friends 21st” – 35 years and 3 kids later, they are the family behind Luddite Wines. After a few years abroad, Niels and Penny returned to South Africa and found their plot of land in Bot River. Niels had a definite plan as to how he wanted to make wine and Penny knew that she wanted to farm as “green” as possible. Everything had to be about the wine. No intervention, no shortcuts and staying true to only bottling what, hand on heart was the best.

OUR FAVE THING ABOUT THIS WINE
This little babe of a blend includes Chenin, Viognier and ‘Fumé Blanc’ – which is just a fancy way of referring to the style in which the Sauvignon Blanc is made - partly on skins and partly in barrel. Not one for doing anything just for the sake of being fancy, winemaker Niels’ rationale here is that he just can’t bring himself to put the varietal on one of his labels.

At Luddite, everyone who works there gets together in the kitchen for coffee in the morning. Everyone is part of a team and not just a farm labourer. They have only replaced 3 staff in 18 years – all growing old together. It’s a happy farm and Penny’s motto has always been “never ask someone else to do something that you won’t do”

ABOUT GREYSTONE

What happens when you hire a viticulturist from Penfolds and give him a sheep farm? He hires an ex-accountant studying wine and sets about planting vineyards destined for making some of the world’s best Pinot Noir (seriously, they’ve won an award) in less than 2 decades. Named after the unique limestone soils, a mix of fossils, seashells and small pebbles that have been fused together through the seismic movement of North Canterbury, Greystone has made big waves in the wine world under the stewardship of viticulturist & GM, Nick Gill and winemaker, Dom Maxwell.

THE GOOD THINGS THEY DO
Already certified organic, they’re working toward being totally regenerative and carbon neutral. Beyond that, Dom is exploring being extra low-intervention – to the extent that he’s even doing away with needing cellar space for some of his ferments, despite his wife suggesting maybe possums could be a problem… He’s pioneering a whole new type of winemaking, where wines ferment in the vineyard block where the grapes grow, which means all the yeasts are just from that particular vineyard and the wine continues to be exposed to the weather variations of the vintage.
OUR FAVE THING ABOUT THIS WINE
As we’ve learned, Dom is pretty big on not interfering with his wines – which means loads of attention to detail, but very little else. This unfiltered, unfined ginger-laced gem is not only delicious, but it’s also vegan-friendly!

ABOUT GUTHRIE FAMILY WINES

Blair and Caroline Guthrie are making honest wines, farmed responsibly. Their baby side project (only 600 cases a year) is filled with so much love – their wines are comforting and lighthearted as a Sunday morning dance party in your bathrobe. Beneath that, they are strongly focused on preserving and encouraging the good in the world – environmentally, ethically and everything in between.

THE GOOD THINGS THEY DO
They seek out some of the best in the biz farmers in the region, who are doing things the right way in the vineyards. Using the by-product of sugar cane processing, their corks look a little different, but they’re totally carbon neutral. Eschewing capsules entirely, they’re saving waste on that front too. They also support cool young artists they trawl up on the interweb for their labels.
OUR FAVE THING ABOUT THIS WINE
Have you seen it?! Kidding! This pretty little pink baby was a solution to a couple of challenges – drought, fires and potential smoke taint. The solution? Get creative! Which is exactly what Blair did! Inspired by a technique called Ripasso used in Italy where lighter Valpolicella wine is ‘repassed’ over the skins of punchier Amarone to pull some colour, texture and flavour, he did the same thing with Viognier (a white grape!) and Pinot Noir skins. Bada-bing, bada-boom – pink Vio!

ABOUT THE BLANKBOTTLE WINERY

So much of our approach to wine has been inspired by Pieter Walser and his BLANKbottle wines – where the bottles typically don’t show the varietal to avoid any preconceived ideas about what people think they like and don’t like when it comes to wines. “You can’t judge it by the label; it takes drinking a whole bottle to get to know the wine.” He also designs those labels.

THE GOOD THINGS THEY DO
While he doesn’t own any vineyards of his own, Pieter makes sure to work only with winegrowers who are farming with care, attention and intention; and he drives thousands of kilometers across South Africa every year to reach these people to source the exceptional fruit for his wines. Once the wines make it back to his cellar, Pieter is meticulous in his winemaking – not adding or removing anything…while sometimes also being a little off the wall.
OUR FAVE THING ABOUT THIS WINE
As with any of Pieter’s wines, it comes with a great story! The grower Pieter buys the grapes for this wine from, in an attempt to avoid his neighbour trying to steal his clients, invented a pseudonym for Pieter – he dubbed him the jam maker from Strand (where Pieter lives in South Africa).

ABOUT XECO

XECO is the brain-child of three 30-something 'fino fiends' who have long shared a love of fine sherry - and frustration that this love wasn't shared by their friends. The solution? Find better friends (kidding!) OR - find a way to bring a ‘Next Generation’ sherry to their friends and the world, finally giving this marvellous drink some long-overdue recognition. With 30 combined years of experience in the drinks industry, the trio set out to create a new brand of Sherry to put a contemporary edge on an age-old product, and in doing so help to dispel some of the myths around the category, while encouraging a new generation of discerning drinkers to give Sherry a second look.

Beyond working to not only preserve and perhaps write a new chapter for this historic bevvie, the XECO gals are working hard to change some of the traditions in the region too. They’ve recently got approval to trial new cardboard bottle technology – a big step toward sustainability – which is no small feat in a place that does not like to change the rules!
OUR FAVE THING ABOUT THIS WINE
The extra touch of sweetness on this one makes it the perfect after dinner treat, especially if you’re not up for full-on dessert. It’s just sweet enough to satisfy that little sugar craving.
