Farming Practices: Organic Practising and Sustainable
Saga Vineyards is a story-driven wine label founded by Reenen Borman, Fritz Schoon, and Henk Kotze—three friends with deep ties to South African wine, food, and storytelling. The project is built around the idea that great vineyards don’t always announce themselves. Sometimes, halfway between here and nowhere, you turn left into a site that looks ordinary—until it isn’t. Saga is about those places: unexpected, overlooked, and quietly remarkable.
The first chapter in the Saga was Sons of Sugarland, a wine born from a single block of SH99 Syrah—a clone named for a state highway that runs through Sugar Land, Texas. It was a nod to origin, movement, and the idea that stories can start anywhere. Since then, the range has grown to include other varieties, but the ethos remains: raw, expressive wines made with minimal intervention and maximum character.
Winemaking is led by Reenen Borman, also known for his work at Boschkloof and Kottabos. For Sons of Sugarland, he uses 100% whole bunches, concrete fermenters, and a light touch in the cellar. His goal is to make wine that’s as raw as possible—but still with a pretty side. The result is textured, perfumed, and quietly rebellious.
Saga Vineyards isn’t just about wine—it’s about the places and people that shape it. Sons of Sugarland is one of its most compelling tales.
