Tohu

Meet Tohu, a Māori, whānau-owned company

Location: Marlborough, New Zealand

Farming Practices: Sustainable

Tohu isn’t just a winery—it’s a story of firsts, of whenua, and of long-term vision. Founded in 1998 as the world’s first Māori-owned wine company, it’s rooted in values that go far beyond the vineyard. The land (whenua) is central—not just as a place, but as identity, ancestry, and belonging. The wines are made with aroha (love and respect), guided by kaitiakitanga (guardianship of the natural world), and shaped by a 500-year sustainability plan that puts future generations first.

The koru on the label—a spiral drawn from nature—symbolizes new life and continuous growth. It’s a quiet reminder that wine is more than product; it’s connection. Tohu’s approach is rooted in manaakitanga (hospitality and care), and it shows—from the way the vines are farmed to the way the wines are shared. This is New Zealand wine with soul: fresh, vibrant, and deeply woven into the story of its people.

Take a sip home with you!
