ABOUT COSTA DEL SWART This is what happens when a barrel of wine destined to go into a beautiful bubbly gets thieved by Ewan Mackenzie. Costa del Swart is now an ongoing project between winemaker Christa von la Chevallerie of Huis van Chevallerie and our favourite sneaky sommelier, getting ‘weird and funky in the Swartland’.
OUR FAVE THING ABOUT THIS WINE The first vintage in 2017 was made of a barrel of Chenin, already picked and fermenting, that didn’t have the chemical properties to work in the bubbly it was supposed to go into. The third time they’re making this one, the grapes were intended for this wine from the start – the ‘normal’ way of doing things! Backward from how it’s been done before, but the right way around.
