Meet Hans & Therese Herzog
Location: Marlborough, New Zealand
Farming Practices: Organic
Hans Herzog Wines is the life’s work of Hans and Therese Herzog - Swiss transplants who brought centuries of winemaking heritage to Marlborough and never looked back. Hans is famously meticulous, farming every vine himself and crafting each wine with obsessive precision. He’s planted over 25 grape varieties on their tiny riverside estate, often just a few rows of each, from classics like Pinot Noir and Chardonnay to wildcards like Zweigelt, St. Laurent, and Arneis. It’s a viticultural playground for a man who refuses to compromise.
Everything is done by hand, from pruning to bottling, with wild ferments, no fining or filtration, and long aging in barrel and bottle. The vineyard is certified organic, yields are kept low, and nothing is rushed. Hans doesn’t chase trends or scores - he chases purity, structure, and the quiet thrill of doing things the hard way. The result is a lineup of wines that are as nerdy, rare, and uncompromising as the man behind them.
