ABOUT KHAYELITSHA'S FINEST WINES

Khayelitsha, located on the fringes of Cape Town, is a sprawling township a hangover from the Group Areas Act of the Apartheid regime. Lindile ‘Lindi’ Ndzaba, who was born and raised, and still lives in Khayelitsha is looking to transform the narrative of wines in South Africa. In a country where the vast majority of citizens don’t have access to transport to visit wine farms or the money to spend in expensive city restaurants or bars – he realised he needed to bring fine wine culture to his community, and by doing this also start shifting the mind-set of wine for consumption to wine for appreciation. Good wine he believes should be available to all South Africans and not just the privileged. And so, with the help of his long-time friend, Ewan Mackenzie he sourced small-batch wines from across the Cape and launched Khayelitsha’s Finest Wines.

The vision of KFW is to see the townships develop and have their own resources to produce products without outsourcing. Not only does Lindile aim to grow his business internationally, he also wants to encourage the community to work together to further the mindset of “supporting local brands.” He aims to continually provide jobs and, in essence, fight unemployment in the community of Khayelitsha.

OUR FAVE THING ABOUT THIS WINE
We love that the team at The Fledge Wine Co. who made the wine searched all over South Africa’s coolest coastal regions to source the perfect mix of ultra-classy Sauvignon Blanc for this baby. She sure is classy.

ABOUT ATLAS SWIFT

Just unpacking the name of the brand gives you a sense of how proprietors Martin & Welma Smith view the world. Atlas, the titan of perseverance, tasked with holding up the sky represents how very seriously they take their commitment to protecting the lands on which they grow their grapes. It also speaks to the maps on which the terroirs they work with are laid out. Swifts, one of the fastest and most aerial of the bird species, represents their nimble exploration to find said terroirs. The project, which on the surface, focuses on site-specific Chardonnays from distinctive places scattered across the Western Cape of South Africa, carries with it so much more than just beautiful wines of exceptional texture (Martin is the KING of texture! – Cami). It carries with it the dreams of some of the most authentic souls we have the pleasure to know.

THE GOOD THINGS THEY DO
Martin & Welma see Atlas Swift as an opportunity to raise their young children in an environment where work can be fuelled by passion, where the land and the importance of protecting it, is paramount. They are shaping the next generation to be conscious and responsible for the unique place they hold in the world.
OUR FAVE THING ABOUT THIS WINE
You really can taste the ocean on this one! The vineyard, which is about 8km from the sea, has really high levels of sodium (salt) and potassium in the soil, which Welma believes is the secret to that minerally (think of rocks along the shore), salty character in the wine.

OUR FAVE THINGS ABOUT THESE WINES

SOUFFLE D'ETOILES
This wine is extra brut, which means it’s really low in sugar - which must mean it’s good for us? Right? So drink up!

COLOMBARD
Talk about hands-on – hand-bottled, hand-corked, hand-labelled and hand-waxed, there’s a lot of our Wine Thief, Ewan’s love (and time) in every stage of this wine.

PINOT GRIS
Excuse us while we go full wine geek here – but there’s a fermentation technique called ‘carbonic maceration’ that’s usually used in the light, fun reds. Hans did that! With this white grapes! Try it! Now!

RODON
Italy isn’t exactly famous for its rosé, but Matilde takes her Chiaretto (chiaro = pale) very seriously. She uses a method called Saignée for this one – which means a portion of the pink juice is poured off from the red wine fermentation, to give a pink wine. This also results in a more concentrated red wine (more concentrated because the remaining fermentation has a higher solid-to-liquid ratio).

RETIREMENT AT 65
Gosh, we love that Pieter believed so much in the fruit from the vineyard. Despite it having been ravaged by birds and/or sheep for many years, Pieter managed to produce his first vintage of this small little block, 65 years after its inception.

FINO
It’s so versatile! Serve it over ice, straight up in a glass, or mix it with your favourite tonic, lemonade, or even bubbles! Cocktail options are endless. Have fun experimenting!

Paper Kite White Wine
Thorne & Daughters

PAPER KITE OLD VINE SEMILLON

$398

By Thorne & Daughters

WHITE | BUTTER, BABY
Just think of anything yellow and delicious and you’re thinking of Paper Kite – butter, honey, peaches – they’re all here.

WHAT WE TASTE
Yellow flowers and honey with a sprinkle of salt

PERFECT PAIRING
With plenty of conviction, she stands up boldly to an array of flavours but works well for some contemplative thinking-drinking if there’s no food around.
TEMP CHECK
Give her a bit of time to shake the chill to better hear all she has to say. Get her out of the fridge about 15 minutes before drinking.
ABOUT THORNE & DAUGHTERS

They say, quite simply, that they are raising handcrafted wines along with their two daughters. But we think John & Tasha Seccombe are doing so much more than that! They’re raising the profile of forgotten grapes, reflecting on the heritage of a complicated wine-producing country and thoughtfully capturing a new narrative of what that could become.

OUR FAVE THING ABOUT THIS WINE
Mother vineyard to the Tin Soldier, Paper Kite is a celebration of the heritage and history of Semillon in South Africa. It’s made from an old vineyard that includes a mix of both ‘normal’ Semillon and Semillon Gris – which is a mutation (Oh, yes! Grapes have mutants!) that’s almost entirely unique to South Africa – nobody is completely sure how it even happened!
THE TECHNICAL STUFF
Place: Swartland, South Africa
Grape: Semillon Blanc, Semillon Gris
Style: Rich in flavour, colour and personality
