ABOUT LUDDITE

“A dope-smoking political anarchist meets an upstanding young goody-goody sportsman at a mutual friends 21st” – 35 years and 3 kids later, they are the family behind Luddite Wines. After a few years abroad, Niels and Penny returned to South Africa and found their plot of land in Bot River. Niels had a definite plan as to how he wanted to make wine and Penny knew that she wanted to farm as “green” as possible. Everything had to be about the wine. No intervention, no shortcuts and staying true to only bottling what, hand on heart was the best.

OUR FAVE THING ABOUT THIS WINE
This little babe of a blend includes Chenin, Viognier and ‘Fumé Blanc’ – which is just a fancy way of referring to the style in which the Sauvignon Blanc is made - partly on skins and partly in barrel. Not one for doing anything just for the sake of being fancy, winemaker Niels’ rationale here is that he just can’t bring himself to put the varietal on one of his labels.
THE TECHNICAL STUFF
Place: Cape South Coast, South Africa
Grape: Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier
Style: Rich but racy
Ingredients: Grapes + a splash of sulphur (as little as possible!)

ABOUT GUTHRIE FAMILY WINES

Blair and Caroline Guthrie are making honest wines, farmed responsibly. Their baby side project (only 600 cases a year) is filled with so much love – their wines are comforting and lighthearted as a Sunday morning dance party in your bathrobe. Beneath that, they are strongly focused on preserving and encouraging the good in the world – environmentally, ethically and everything in between.

THE GOOD THINGS THEY DO
They seek out some of the best in the biz farmers in the region, who are doing things the right way in the vineyards. Eschewing capsules entirely, they’re saving waste on that front too. They also support cool young artists they trawl up on the interweb for their labels.
OUR FAVE THING ABOUT THIS WINE
Have you seen it?! Kidding! This pretty little pink baby was a solution to a couple of challenges – drought, fires and potential smoke taint. The solution? Get creative! Which is exactly what Blair did! Inspired by a technique called Ripasso used in Italy where lighter Valpolicella wine is ‘repassed’ over the skins of punchier Amarone to pull some colour, texture and flavour. He did the same thing with Viognier (a white grape!) and Pinot Noir skins in 2020  & everybody LOVED it! So it's back - new grapes, who dis?
THE TECHNICAL STUFF
Place: Mendocino County, California, USA
Grape:  Chenin Blanc (with Carignan skins) - organically farmed

ABOUT WHISTLER

The story of Whistler (“Pfeiffer” means “whistler” in German) starts in 1982 when Martin Pfeiffer, a third-generation grape grower and former head vineyard manager at Penfolds, purchased the Heysen estate. In 1994, he planted cuttings of the famous Kalimna 3C Shiraz from Penfolds’ iconic Grange vineyards, and they released their first wines in 1997. The Pfeiffer family has been growing grapes for four generations, starting with Albert Heinrich in the Riverland region. After Martin and his wife Sally retired in 2020, their son Sam took the reins.

THE GOOD THINGS THEY DO
When Sam Pfeiffer took over the family estate after his parents retired, he kept the organic and biodynamic practices that they started in 2013 & 2020 respectively. He proudly shares, “We haven’t used a herbicide or pesticide on our patch of dirt since 2013!” More recently, they’ve installed a solar panel system on their barrel storage shed, which not only powers their winery but will eventually let them give some energy back to the grid.
Water is a big deal in Australia, so they’ve decided to add rainwater storage that can hold nearly 50,000 litres. This means Whistler will be completely self-sufficient when it comes to water, without needing to tap into the Murray River.

OUR FAVE THING ABOUT THIS WINE
Another hit on the label front! The willow tree that grows next to the dam on the estate where the fruit is sourced; Saturn represents the “other-worldliness” of skin contact wines; and a clay pot reminds us that, while orange wine is recently trendy, it’s a practice that’s been around for a long, long time.

ABOUT LTD +

Chad and Bree Stock, a husband-and-wife team, have merged their superpowers and unique backgrounds in wine to create Ltd. +, which emerged as a collaboration with farmers in the area, inspired to develop a diverse and sustainable wine landscape. The wines, often made from less common grape varieties adopting innovative techniques, are changing preconceived notions of Oregon wine.

THE GOOD THINGS THEY DO
Where do we start? The whole project is geared toward ensuring Oregon remains a viable wine-growing region through climate change. They’re not only encouraging growers to work with a more diverse spread of grapes that will weather the changing weather, but they’re also ensuring that seasonal workers are employed for longer because these alternative grapes ripen at different times. They’re also active supporters of the BIPOC and LGBTQ+ communities in wine.
OUR FAVE THING ABOUT THIS WINE
Meet their piquette orange —crafted by adding spring water to wine must and re-starting fermentation. The result? A fresh, tart, and delightful drink that's perfect for any occasion. Historically enjoyed by farmworkers on their breaks, this low-ABV wine is the ideal refreshment for picnics or beach outings.
